What is Morse code?

Morse code was developed in the 1830s–40s by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail for the electric telegraph. Each letter and number is represented by a pattern of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). A dot is one unit long, a dash is three units, and the gaps between letters and words follow strict timing — which is why trained operators could "read" it by ear at remarkable speed.

Where it's still used today

Amateur (ham) radio — Morse (CW mode) remains one of the most reliable ways to communicate over weak radio signals.

Aviation and maritime — navigation beacons still identify themselves in Morse code.

Accessibility — people with limited mobility have used Morse-based input systems to communicate.

Pop culture — from movies to video games, Morse code shows up everywhere as a puzzle or Easter egg.
