What is a good typing speed?

Below 30 WPM — beginner range. Totally normal if you're starting out.

40–60 WPM — average for most people, fine for everyday work.

60–80 WPM — fast. You're quicker than most office workers.

80+ WPM — professional territory: writers, programmers, and transcriptionists live here.

100+ WPM — elite. Fewer than 5% of typists reach this consistently.

How to type faster (for real)

Learn touch typing — type without looking at the keyboard. It's slow for a week, then life-changing.

Keep your wrists floating — don't rest them on the desk while typing.

Accuracy first — speed follows naturally once your fingers stop making mistakes.

Practice daily — even 10 minutes a day on this test will raise your WPM within weeks.

Sit properly — screen at eye level, elbows at 90 degrees. Posture affects speed more than people think.

FAQs

Is this typing test free?

Yes, completely free with unlimited attempts.

How is WPM calculated?

Standard method: every 5 correct characters counts as one "word," divided by minutes elapsed. Only correct characters count toward your score.

Why did my test end early?

If you finish the entire passage before time runs out, the test completes and shows your final score.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, but typing tests are most accurate with a physical keyboard. On-screen keyboards will naturally score lower.

Is my typing data saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser — we don't record what you type.
